The Federal Minister of Finance will be meeting with his provincial and territorial counterparts on Dec. 20 to discuss Canada’s retirement income system, including enhancements to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). CRFA is concerned about payroll tax increases if the CPP is expanded. As a result, CRFA is urging Minister Flaherty and all provincial finance ministers to oppose changes to CPP that would result in payroll tax increases for the foodservice industry. CRFA is also asking the Minister to consider re-indexing the year’s basic exemption (YBE) which would reduce the payroll tax burden for lower-income workers and their employers.
