Blood alcohol limit remains at 0.08

(Dec. 14/10) In a victory for licensees, the government has finally recognized the merit in CRFA’s arguments against Bill 71 aimed at lowering the allowable blood alcohol concentration (BAC) from 0.08 to 0.05 for fully licensed drivers in Quebec.

CRFA appeared at the Parliamentary Commission on Bill 71 and voiced our opposition in the media. CRFA members joined us in meetings on this issue with government and opposition parties. The Bill was withdrawn from the agenda before summer recess.

CRFA recently met with the Transport Minister, who recognized the arguments of restaurants, bars and caterers by setting up more road controls, stiffer fines for those driving with a BAC over 0.08, and increased and focused advertising. A pilot project will be set up to evaluate how drivers react to a BAC between 0.05 and 0.08.
