(May 28/10) Following the lead of many provinces, Manitoba has significantly increased fines for individuals who illegally provide liquor to minors (i.e. those under the age of 18).
In Manitoba, minors can legally consume alcohol in the following licensed establishments, provided they are accompanied by a parent, guardian, spouse or common-law partner (aged 18 and over).
Fines for licensees violating these regulations will rise from $292.65 to $655.65.
Fines have also increased for:
These increased fines follow Family Services and Consumer Affairs Minister Gord Mackintosh’s commitment to reduce substance abuse among Manitoba’s youth. According to the 2009 Youth Health Survey Report, 36 per cent of high school students in the province consumed alcohol within the past 30 days, and 34 per cent admitted to ‘binge’ drinking in the same period.
On behalf of commercial liquor licensees, CRFA will participate in Manitoba’s summit on underage drinking this fall.
