Seeking a commitment for sodium reduction to work

(Dec. 14/10) Last summer, the Sodium Working Group released an interim goal of reducing sodium intake in the Canadian population to 2,300 mg per person per day by 2016 – currently, the average Canadian consumes 3,400 mg per day.  This goal was endorsed by health ministers across Canada.

CRFA has been consulting with Health Canada on approaches to setting the sodium reduction targets and, in conjunction with other food stakeholders, urged the Health Minister to make a fully resourced consumer education and research commitment. For the sodium strategy to succeed, such a commitment must accompany voluntary industry efforts. Click here (PDF) to read our letter to Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

Voluntary sodium reduction targets for manufactured foods are to be finalized by March, with targets for the foodservice industry to follow in mid 2011. CRFA members are encouraged to work with their suppliers to reduce the sodium in their menu offerings. Click here (PDF) to download CRFA’s sodium reduction guide.
