PEI election wrap up

On the campaign’s opening day, CRFA Director Liam Dolan and a number of operators hosted Premier Ghiz. This event gave the industry an opportunity to raise its concerns and hear directly from the Premier. (Oct. 17/11) On Oct. 3, Islanders re-elected a majority Liberal government under Robert Ghiz.
Even though CRFA has a good working relationship with the Ghiz government, we developed a strategy to put the restaurant industry front and centre during the campaign. Premier Ghiz held a large lead in pre-election polls, but CRFA gave the main opposition party equal billing to raise the industry’s profile and concerns with all candidates. Issues discussed included:
- high personal taxes and bracket creep;
- minimum wage and the need for differentials;
- high provincial sales tax and the lack of input tax credits;
- red tape reduction; and
- labour shortage.
