Quebec’s minimum wage to rise May 1
(Jan. 13/12) Just before Christmas, Labour Minister Lise Thériault announced the following minimum wage increases for May 1, 2012:
- regular minimum wage rises from $9.65 to $9.90/hour; and
- tipped minimum wage increases from $8.35 to $8.55/hour.
These hikes did not exceed the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which was CRFA’s bottom line.
CRFA action
In early December, we met with Minister Thériault to make the following requests:
- freeze minimum wage for 2012, or at minimum, keep increases in line with CPI; and
- heighten the differential (now 15.8 per cent) between regular minimum wage and tipped minimum wage, and introduce a training wage differential.
Although our second suggestion was not followed, we will continue to push for the introduction of a training wage and a greater differential between the tipping wage and regular minimum wage.
